S. Sz. had been preparing for months to flee. He drifted for four hours in the icecold water of the River Szamos, his arrival in Hungary was something straight out of an action movie. He was lucky not to drown, not to freeze and not to be shot to death. In fact he was even joined by his family later.
A. H. and his wife had to lie in court, claiming one of them committed adultery so that they would be granted a divorce. For years they walked past each other like strangers, and both entered into marriages of convenience so that all doubt would be erased in the small town they lived in. Their scheme was wrought with secrets, conspiracy, a lot of paperwork and even more psychological torture. It took them six and a half years before they were able to live together again and start everything anew – this time in Hungary.
But is it possible to start a new life having left everything behind? Can one find a home away from home?
What prejudices and resistance did they have to overcome? What happened to these people?
Our film's protagonists were born Hungarian outside Hungary’s current borders. They resettled in Hungary between 1980 and 1991, hoping to find a better and freer life in the mother country. And that’s when the blows came. ”They called us Romanians and asked where we had learned to speak Hungarian so well.
They hated us here because they thought we took their jobs from them.” Different customs, a different socialization and clothes all made it difficult to do what most immigrants desire: to blend in and be one of the Hungarians in Hungary.More than one hundred thousand have come in the last 15 years from home to – hopefully – home.
