”I met Eta by the Bódva Stream near the woods. I first heard her bubbly laughter as she glided barefoot in the snow in a red sweater. ”I'm not cold, because my heart keeps me warm,” she said. At 14, she married Boldi, who wove the prettiest baskets in the area. They live in Szendrőlád – on a meager income, but in peace, love, and happiness. Eta gave birth to seven children, the oldest of whom is a girl; the others are boys. They have a dozen grandchildren from the older ones, who have all started families. Only Iván and Roki, the two youngest, live with them – apprentices, as they like to say. They still go to school. Although they live hand to mouth, they are not in dire need. One day Eta called me and asked us to film Boldi so that she can have it to remember him by… to see him whenever she wants to. We came and shot the film. She called the children and grandchildren and arranged who and what to shoot. She was left on her own. She tried to enjoy her new situation. She behaved like a strong man, as she should, since her two underage sons were there. She sent the older one to Tokaj to study to be a cook. She found the money for it too. She gathered mushrooms, harvested potatoes, took whatever job she could. And of course she called us to show her pride…
Years later, she introduced us to Zsolti, a young man who moved to Hungary from Rumania. Her eyes were on fire. She was in love and she didn't care about the borders of state or family. She wanted to live.”
