In Germany many people bearing the above title have spoken: children and grandchildren of the national socialist leaders and high ranking SS and Gestapo officers. All of them have a hard time living with the memories of their ascendants – their fathers or grandfathers. Although they find their actions abhorrent they also feel love or even respect for their fathers or grandfathers.
Similar accounts, interviews or documentaries have not been made in Hungary until now. In this film László Endre’s son, living in Hungary, and his two grandchildren speak. As undersecretary of state in 1944, László Endre was one of those in charge of sending Hungarian Jews to ghettos, and having them transported to German concentration camps, where they were killed.
The events are reflected entirely differently in the eyes of the son, Zsigmond Endre, and the two grandchildren. The son had devoted all of his life to clearing his father’s name of all the charges brought against him. The second generation, on the other hand, escape into silence whenever possible: they don’t talk about it, and they would rather forget about it all. But they can’t. The past lives on one way or another. In some cases it means agony.
