Suddenly three men, who lives in the attic, start harassing him. They construct coarse and unpleasant schemes against him and carry them into effect at the most unexpected times and places. (Are they bored, frustrated, are they revenging themselves for some trifling thing, or on life itself?) Holl becomes fearful, recounting his acquaintances who may have cause to do this. His pursuers are just about to finish pestering him when Holl starts out on a series of counter-attacks, and stabs a homeless man instead of them.
