A wealthy middle-class family in a small town. The son strays from the fold. All the townfolk say that the devil got into him. His family disowns him, and so as a last resort he marries the strictly brought-up daughter of a Christian petit bourgeois family. She talks him into opening an undertaker’s business from what remains of his wasted fortune. He is quite skilled, so he starts to make coffins. They need every penny, for in a short time seven children are born, one dead.
But the man falls in love with a travelling actress performing in the town, and leaves his family for her. After he returns to the town, he opens another undertaker’s business, competing with that of his ex-wife’s. Driven mad by love, he sets fire to the old shop. His youngest child dies in the fire. The depressed and broken mother puts her children in an orphanage. After much suffering, she restarts the undertaker’s business, so that they can all return to the house.
But the forsaken children seem to turn against her in a stubborn alliance. The mother flees to the three rooms with her older children. This is where the story of the mother and the four children begins. The film follows their lives from the sixties to the eighties.
