It is 1899 in Pest. A kind-hearted successful lawyer is happily married with two children. Even after seven years of marriage Dr. Károly Szombathy is still in love with his wife, Irén.
One fatal winter’s day a telegram arrives summoning the lawyer to the prison to a dying man. Dr. Szombathy tries to avoid having to do the stressful task, but Irén insists he should go. The dying prisoner reveals that he was innocent in the murder case for which he was convicted, but that the perpetrator was actually the woman the barrister later married. With his last grain of energy the dying man curses the lawyer. Károly Szombathy’s former conviction concerning his infallibility, clear vision, and objectivity is shaken. Suspicion sets in, despite his efforts to uproot it. Could his wife be the murderer? His only aim from this point on is to find out what happened on that fatal night seven years before.
