The man who left Hungary during the ’56 revolution lives in a comfortable retirement with his British wife. After receiving a strange telephone call he returns to his birthplace after forty years to see his old love.  He discovers that her past has many secrets and very different from what he had believed. He encounters new chapters in his life – past, present and future. Makk, whose greatest past successes have involved the portrayal of women, here again creates a rich tapestry of intimate moments and human frailty. Whilst ”A Long Weekend in Pest and Buda” is set in contemporary Hungary, it also becomes a fascinating observation piece about power, the fact that many familiar faces are still around and in control today. Most of the nations of the old East-European block are struggling with this very same problem of past betrayals, beliefs and ideals. The film also indicates the time it takes for the wounds of history to heal and people to forget and forgive. The beautiful city of Budapest serving as the background enhances the human drama.
