The story of the film follows Weber’s opera, but it is placed in contemporary settings. Max is a policeman and a sharpshooter, who accidentally injures a hostage instead of a terrorist in an action. He looses confidence and becomes anxious and unable to short. One of his colleagues, Kaspar, offers him special bullets that always hit the target. Max accepts the deal, and he gets the seven magic bulets. But he doesn’t know that the last bullet will be driven by the Devil and not him. Max is given a new task. He must follow and protect a Russian chess master, because somebody is planning to kill him. Max follows the master everywhere, the hotel, the races, or when he takes a walk. The master decides to take a rest in a small park. Max notices his own daughter and wife among the children playing ball in the park. The ball accidentally hits the master. Max sees his wife and the master meeting and how they become attracted to each other. The approaching tragedy can only be stopped by a miracle.
