What can a woman do when her family is in desperate straits: with antisemitism worsening in the country and her husband in a forced labour camp, they have to wear the stigma of the yellow star... She decides to save her children by sending them from Budapest, under false names and with forged papers, two different places in the country. Who come to help? Her son finds refuse at a former nun's farmhouse. Her daughter, aided by an aristocrat, the great-grandchild of an 1849 martyr, leaves for a peaceful wine region. Still, the girl's fate takes some exciting turns: since her shelter has been eliminated by the Gestapo, she wanders from one family to another until, through meeting someone accidentally, she finds herself in the same place as her brother. The two children now live as if they were on holiday. The distant bombardment, the constructing of the air-raid shelter, the POW-s and the German armoured troops in the neighbouring forest - all these appear to be a romantic setting for a summer vacation. The girl gets attracted to a German student-soldier. With the front coming nearer and nearer, acquaintances and strangers are pressed together in the stuffy, dark shelter smelling of soil. Then the gunfire stops. Russian soldiers open up the door. The world has changed. Soon the father arrives. The boy tells him his sister is hiding in the attic. But upstairs they only find her diary with a quotation from Romeo and Juliet in it: she has escaped with the young German soldier.
