Golden City is a unique sci-fi, made from a low budget and in black and white, with strange characters moving between two worlds. For his protagonist he chose a Ukranian prostitute, who knows the way to another world, another dimension, the "Golden City", and an alien disguised as a fake motor-cycle cop who is searching for the passage back to his own world.
Sandor Cs. Nagy's film, a slow and mysterious story is about wishing to be somewhere else. He uses a clever and nice solution when the other, utopistic dimension - which is more beautiful and harmonious - Golden City is represented by scenes shot on the Bulgarian cost. These are black and white pictures too, but the material is different so the texture and the outlook become different too, as does the medium: the constant sunshine, the strong lights against the real and present time of the story's shabby city. But where do we feel at home? Do we wish to live in the copy or our present worn-down, unliveable world or rather in a dream-world? It is searching á la Eastern Europe; choices mingled with illusions.
(Balázs Varga film critic)
The film is about the romance between a schizophrenic prostitute and a motor cycle cop.
It is hard to cross over to the Golden City...
