The story starts in the summer 1944, before the liberation of Paris. Fernand Bonnard, the director of the Zoo, will soon be sixty years old. Under a pacifist surface lurks fear of suffering and death, and because he has a heroic soul but is a coward he is always terribly ashamed. After the Nazis executed his son, Fernand must give shelter to his granddaughter Philippine. The eight-year-old girl is at the same time flirtatious, curious, deductive and boyish. Because of his love Fernand makes her believe that her father is alive and is the victim of resistance. In order to prove these tales this cowardly man must become a real war hero, which puts him in a dangerous and unbearable situation. The young Philippine, who discovers the truth in the meantime, puts all her efforts into helping her grandfather maintain the role of the great resistance fighter.
