Béla Tarr Born in Pécs, Hungary in 1955. At age 16, he began his career as an amateut film-maker. He also worked as a shipyard handyman and porter. In 1977, he debuted with his feature film Family Nest. Graduated from the Hungarian Academy of Theatre and Film in 1981. In 1979-80 was member of the direction committee of the Balázs Béla Stúdió in Budapest. Founding member of Társulás Film Stúdió in 1981. In 1989-90 was in Berlin on a DAAD grant and since 1990 has been working as an associate professor at the Berlin Film- and Television Academy (DFFB).
