(1925, Kide) After studying humanities in Budapest and Kolozsvár (Cluj), he graduated in film directing from the Academy for Theatre and Film Arts in 1950. He was one of the determining personalities of the “Confrontation”-generation and as a student was already director of the Arpád Horváth College. Between 1951 and 1957, a manager of the script department he played a determining role in film management. From the late fifties his changing world view could be seen in his films, as well, starting with Difficult People (1964). He makes both feature and documentary films. Between 1981 and 1986 he was president of the Association of Hungarian Film and Television Artists, between 1996 and 1998, president of the Hungarian National Television Foundation.Awards:Béla Balázs Award (1962, 1965), Merited Artist (1967), National Trade Union Council's Award (1968), Kossuth Prize (1970), Outstanding Artist (1980), Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic Middle Cross (1995)
