The Festival is a cultural, non - profit event, held by the Associaçăo Brasileira Mostra Internacional de Cinema and recognized by the International Federation of the Association of Film Producers.

The Săo Paulo International Film Festival includes two sections: International Perspective and New Filmmakers Competition - a competitive section for films by new filmmakers (with first, second or third films).
